Frequently Asked Questions

What is Companionship?

By definition, companionship means “a feeling of fellowship or friendship”, and for us at Stay Connected, that is exactly what we aim to provide. We believe in nurturing genuine connections, whether through conversation, shared activities, or simply being present. Our companions offer more than just company; they bring empathy, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. It's about celebrating individuality, and making everyday moments meaningful.

What are the barriers that may stop you seeking Companionship support?

We understand that reaching out for companionship can feel like a big step. Many people face barriers that hold them back, even when support could make a real difference. Here are some common concerns and why they shouldn’t stop you from connecting:

Worry about reaching out for support

You might worry that asking for companionship means admitting weakness or failure. In reality, seeking connection is a sign of strength. Everyone deserves meaningful interaction, and companionship is about enhancing your quality of life, not fixing something that’s broken. Our service is built on dignity, respect, and understanding tailored for your specific need.

Concerns about cost

Finances can be a real worry, but support may be more accessible than you think. If you're over State Pension age and need help due to a physical or mental condition, you may be eligible for Attendance Allowance, a non-means-tested benefit from the UK government. Many people use this to help cover the cost of companionship support. You can find helpful information about the Attendance Allowance in our Support and Advice section.

Believing your need is not serious enough

You might think, “I’m doing fine—I don’t want to take up space.” But companionship isn’t just for those in crisis. It’s for anyone who values connection, conversation, and a little extra support in daily life. Whether it’s once a week or more often, your wellbeing matters. At Stay Connected, we’re here to make that first step feel safe and empowering. If you’re unsure whether companionship is right for you or someone you care about, we’re always happy to talk it through—no pressure, just understanding.

How do I arrange companionship support?

Contact us by phone or email and make a connection with a member of our team. We’ll take the time to understand your situation and answer any questions you may have. From there, we’ll arrange a home visit explore what support might suit you – there’s no pressure to commit, just a chance to talk things through and see what feels right for you.

Where do you provide services?

We offer companionship support across Penarth and its surrounding areas—including Sully, Dinas Powys, Barry, and Wenvoe. We’re also happy to travel further afield when needed, just give us a call to check if we cover your location.

While our focus is supporting Seniors in their own homes, we also visit clients in assisted living and retirement communities. Wherever you live, our aim is to provide meaningful support, creating brighter, busier, and better days.

What can I expect from a visit?

Each visit is shaped around what you want and you’re welcome to adjust how we spend our time together, as our support is always personalised to fit your needs. Typical activities might include conversation over a cuppa, going for a walk or a trip to the shops, playing games, doing crafts, helping with light tasks, or simply offering quiet company. Whether it’s a lively afternoon or a gentle check-in, we’re here to make each visit meaningful and supportive.

How often do you visit?

Our services are tailored to your needs, so visits can be as frequent or occasional as you like—whether that’s once a month, a few times a week, or every day. You’re always welcome to adjust the schedule over time as your needs or preferences change.

Is there a minimum number of hours required?

Our services are booked by the hour, but to get the most from your time with us, we recommend two-hour sessions. This allows space for meaningful conversation, unhurried activities, and a more relaxed pace, especially helpful for those who may need extra time or support. We’ll always tailor the visit length to suit your needs.

Do you provide personal care?

No, we don’t provide personal care such as washing, dressing, or administering medication. Our focus is on companionship - spending quality time together, offering conversation, encouragement, and practical support that promotes wellbeing. While personal care meets physical needs, companionship nurtures emotional and social connection. Both are important, and we’re here to complement existing care with tailored companionship support.

Will the same person always visit?

The simple answer is yes. Consistency is key to our companionship support, giving you the peace of mind that the same companion will be there each and every visit.

If the support is for a member of my family, will you update me?

Yes, absolutely. After each visit, we’ll get in touch to share feedback so you can stay informed and reassured about your loved one’s wellbeing. We believe in open communication and keeping families connected.

Are you qualified and insured?

Yes we are. Our companionship providers each hold an enhanced DBS certificate and have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Society in ‘Understanding Dementia and Engaging with People in the Early Stages of Dementia’. They are also qualified first aiders and hold ‘Adult Safeguarding Level 2’ certificates. All of our companionship providers come from education or healthcare backgrounds and are carefully selected for their compassion, reliability and suitability for the role.
